Introduction to Emergency Telecommunications

Provides an introduction to public safety telecommunications in support of police, fire, and emergency medical services. This course is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of 911 operations, emergency communications, and the unique role public safety telecommunicators serve within the overall emergency response framework. Students successfully completing this course will also receive national certification from the Association of Public Safety Communications Official (APCO) which is broadly accepted in 911 Centers in the United States and Canada.

1. Explain ethical issues related to emergency telecommunication.
2. Describe the basic elements of emergency telecommunication.
3. List the five components of the communications cycle.
4. Explain the methodologies used to ensure proper customer service in an emergency telecommunications environment.
5. Describe basic emergency call processing technique.
6. Describe various elements of the 911 system.
7. Describe various emergency telecommunications technologies.
8. Distinguish among various emergency response call types (police, fire, and EMS).
9. Describe emergency telecommunications components of the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
10. Describe liability mitigation measures within an emergency telecommunications framework.
11. Explain the impact of stress on emergency telecommunications employees.
