Organic Chemistry 1

Survey of carbon-containing compounds, including bonding, intermolecular forces, configurations, stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms. Properties and reactions for the following functional groups: alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes, and alcohols. Fall only. Three class hours, three lab hours. Prerequisite: CHE104.

Subject Code: CHE

Course Number: 201

Credits: 4

Lecture Hours 3

Lab Hours: 3

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe a compound’s bonding (using molecular orbital model), geometry, polarity and functional group(s).
2. Draw conformations, using both Newman projection and perspective drawing.
3. Identify chiral compound.
4. Draw enantiomers, using both perspective drawings and Fischer diagrams.
5. Predict the products of substitution and elimination reactions and provide rationale.
6. Draw the mechanisms for first and second order substitution and elimination reactions.
7. Predict products or design syntheses for selected reactions (alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes and alcohols), including stereochemistry and regiochemistry information.
8. Name and describe physical properties of selected compounds (alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes and alcohols).
9. Describe the processes of various lab techniques (recrystallization, distillation and extraction), as they are performed.
10. Document in a lab notebook the relevant information used in preparing for, performing and reviewing a lab experiment.
