Student Stories

Ruby’s Story
Ruby Hoyt, a Biology major from Brockport, NY, is making her mark at SUNY Genesee Community College through an impressive blend of academic excellence, athletic achievement, and campus leadership. With a 3.74 GPA, she has excelled in her coursework while balancing the demands of collegiate athletics.
On the soccer field, Ruby has earned spots on the Region 3 Women’s Soccer All-Region Team and the
Mid-State Athletic Conference, along with Academic All-Conference, All-Region, and All-American
honors—recognitions that highlight both her skill and dedication.
Beyond athletics, Ruby is an active leader on campus. She serves as Secretary for the Athletic Leadership Committee and participates in Phi Theta Kappa and the National Society of Leadership and Success,
reflecting her commitment to community and student success.
“Ruby represents the very best of Genesee Community College,” said Dr. Craig Lamb, president of GCC. “Her dedication to academics, leadership, and community service exemplifies the qualities we strive to cultivate in our students.”
This year, Ruby was also honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence—one of the highest recognitions a SUNY student can receive. Her story is a shining example of what it means to be a SUNY student: motivated, engaged, and ready to make a difference.

Kevin’s Story
Meet Kevin, an international student from Kigali, Rwanda, who has found his home away
from home at Genesee Community College – State University of New York.
“I came to GCC based on recommendations from friends, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. GCC has provided an affordable education and the opportunity to explore my many interests, ultimately leading to a focus on a degree in Business. My professors at GCC are passionate, engaging, and teach with real-life examples rather than just theory.”
“GCC also offers great access to technology. Computers are available across campus including the Student Union and Residence Halls. I take advantage of the numerous campus amenities, such as the Student Union, Fitness Center, and Pool for exercise and stress management. My favorite spot is the Cafeteria, which is a great place for gatherings and social time. Working as a RA at a resident hall in College Village, I am exposed to a variety of situations from students from all walks of life. It has really helped me develop my people skills— not just for my future career, but for life.”
“Lastly, while the admissions process can be complex, especially for those coming from different parts of the world, my international counselor was proactive and very helpful—much more so than other colleges I was working with. The international team here is supportive and welcoming. They offer travel excursions and events throughout the year, which provide opportunities for cultural exchange and community building, but it’s the small things that really go a long way for me. Being from Kigali, Rwanda, Africa, Batavia, NY is VERY different. I was recently given a scarf and hat so I can be comfortable and warm in the winter. The personalized attention found here makes me feel valued and supported.”

Xander’s Story
Meet Xander, an international student from London, Ontario, who has found his home away from home at Genesee Community College – State University of New York.
“I came to GCC based on recommendations from coaches, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. GCC has provided an affordable education, a chance to play on an award-winning lacrosse team, and the opportunity to explore my many interests, ultimately leading to a focus on a degree in Physical Education Studies.”
“I actually feel like I am receiving a 4-year degree in 2 years! My professors at GCC are passionate and forward thinking. They do their research to make sure students are highly prepared for a career, or for transferring into a bachelor’s degree program at a 4-year school. Class projects are a blend of anatomy, and hands-on learning assignments, making the balance between academics and playing sports very manageable. Plus, a NY state Coaching Micro-credential Certificate is built into the program, so I can teach youth groups over the summers in New York State.”
“GCC is very inclusive, and not just student based. My professors give that personal touch most students desire. They pushed me to be successful in life and even helped me to develop a resume that highlights the challenges I faced that ultimately led to successful outcomes. This was really helpful for applying to schools at the 4-year college level. I am now in the process of selecting a university to continue my studies.”
“The facilities at GCC are super good. The Arena is especially nice. I take advantage of campus amenities like the fitness center, for exercise and stress management. I love playing lacrosse and being part of a team. It has helped me expand my horizons, make friends from people all over the world, and develop my character. We won the regionals in 2023. That was pretty nice. My favorite experience so far was the All-Sports Award Banquet. It’s a day of teams across campus getting together and celebrating. It’s nice to be appreciated.”
“Staying in Canada, I would have been on the computer eight hours a day. I’m glad I chose to come to GCC and experience something new. I went from being a kid that was not the best, and not the worst at things, to having a pretty solid goal. I want to coach and teach youth groups, and be involved in unified sports for youths with disabilities. To help kids get off of their phones and computers and discover activities that they find enjoyable. Toutilize and develop success-based lesson plans that will help entire families discover enjoyable activities while improving their fitness levels. That’s my goal. Regular physical activity is one of the most important things we can do for overall health and well-being.”
