Reflection for Service Learning

Reflection is a primary aspect of the service learning process. During this stage of the process, students critically examine how their experiences provide insight into the field of study, the learning process, and their community.

There is no one “right” way for students to reflect on their experiences. Below are some examples of ways in which you can have your students reflect on their project (please remember that this list is not all inclusive):

  1. Writing
    • Narratives: journals, essays, self-evaluations, letters to editors
    • Research: papers, grant proposals
    • Guides: manuals for future volunteers (students)
  2. Speaking
    • Presentations: in the classroom, to governmental agencies, to professional groups
    • Teaching: in the classroom, to elementary or secondary schools, at professional workshops
  3. Other
    • Multimedia: web page design, photo albums, drawings, poster sessions
    • Performing: music, theater
    • Activities: simulations, recruitment or training of other volunteers, lobbying efforts
