What is Student Support Services?

The Student Support Services Program at Genesee Community College is free to join. The Program offers its participants assistance beyond the normal college experience with the goal of helping them to graduate or transfer to a four-year institution at a higher rate than normally expected.

What Services are Offered to Participants:

  • Academic Advice and Assistance
  • Personal Assistance and Referral (Off or On Campus)
  • Drop in Tutoring without an hourly restriction.
  • Help Understanding the Financial Aid Process and possibly Additional Grant Aid (you must qualify for additional grant aid).
  • Transfer Assistance that includes Application Assistance and College Tours.
  • Free Workshops on Topics such as: Math, Microcomputers, and Stress Management.
  • The Opportunity to Participate in Free or Low-Cost Cultural and Educational Events.
  • Additional Access to Educational Equipment and Other Media (this includes the loan of laptop computers, a digital camera, texts, videos, calculators, and tape recorders).

Who Qualifies

Students may qualify for Student Support Services if they are a U.S. citizen or eligible for federal financial aid and are a first-generation student (parents have not yet completed a Baccalaureate Degree), a low-income individual, or a student who has documented their disability with the Center for Academic Progress. Students must also demonstrate that they have some academic need. To participate in the Program, students must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in GCC.

How to Apply

If you have not received an application during one of the College's group registration sessions, you can call (585) 345-6840 or stop by to request one. Simply fill out and return the application. Program Staff will review it and you will be informed by mail if they require any additional information or if you have been accepted to the Program.

The Student Support Services Program at Genesee Community College is a fully federally funded program. For the 2005-06 school year $278,295 in funds have been provided.
