GCC Admissions Advisor Receives Special Award

March 13, 2014

Ebony Ross

Batavia, NY- Genesee Community College congratulates Admissions advisor Ebony Ross who has received a “Touching the World” Award from Unlimited Possibilities Overcoming Poverty Ministry, Inc. (UPOP). Ross was one of 50 Western New York women recognized at the annual awards dinner at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in early March. Rochester Mayor Lovely-Ann Warren was the keynote speaker.

The event celebrated National Women’s History Month and recognized women for their achievements, community service, professionalism and exemplary leadership. The 2014 honorees included women of leadership from Buffalo, Rochester and throughout Western New York.

UPOP Board member LaShawn Brown nominated Ross and her sister Morgan Williams-Bryant, senior VP of Membership and Recruitment for Girl Scouts of Western NY, for the awards this year. Both were selected and received awards. “I’m excited to be honored with such a diverse group of people from all different backgrounds in the Buffalo area,” said Ross. “To see so many African-Americans doing good, positive things is great.” Ross, who lives in Buffalo, said Brown nominated her “because she felt I was always encouraging and positive to those around me and those in the community.”

Ross joined GCC six years ago. She recruits students from Buffalo and New York City. Prior to coming to GCC, she was a program coordinator for GEAR UP, encouraging inner city youth to go to college. She serves on the education task force for Community Action Organization, encouraging Buffalo students to pursue higher education. “This was instilled in me when I was growing up,” Ross said. “I was always told you have to go to college, and I always took my education seriously.” Ross, who is single, remains actively involved in Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, serving on several committees.

Proceeds from the awards dinner support female college bound students who come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Six college students received $1,000 each in financial support at the event.
