Background:

Considered one of the most gifted tactical commanders in American military history, Civil War General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson lost his life at the hands of fellow Confederate soldiers who mistook Jackson and his men for Union fighters. On Wednesday, February 5, 2014 historian Dr. Chris Mackowski comes to Genesee Community College to talk about “The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson.” His lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in Room T102 of the Conable Technology Building on the GCC Batavia Campus. It is free and open to the public.

Jackson’s death was one of the major turning points of the Civil War, fought from 1861-1865. Jackson died May 10, 1863 eight days after the Battle of Chancellorsville. Revered as a hero, Jackson’s death was a severe setback for the Confederacy.

Dr. Mackowski, a professor of journalism and mass communication at St. Bonaventure University has written extensively about the Civil War. He is also a historian for the National Park Service where he gives tours at four major Civil War battlefields as well as the building where Stonewall Jackson died. Of Jackson’s death he says “Hands-down this is my favorite story of the Civil War. Jackson became so legendary—the great martyr of the Lost Cause—but this was a deeply personal tragedy. He left behind a wife and 6-month-old daughter. The human element often gets forgotten.” Dr. Mackowski will share elements of his book “The Last Days of Stonewall Jackson” during the talk. A second edition with 60 pages of new material was published in 2013. Copies of the book will be available for sale.

The talk is the first in the Spring Civil War Lecture Series at GCC.
