GCC Board of Trustees Visit Lima Campus Center and Learn of Community Partnerships and Opportunities

October 15, 2013

Batavia, New York —Since Lima Campus Center opened its doors in October 2009, not only have hundreds of students earned college credits, but community members of all ages have reveled in new opportunities to engage in an array of services, events and activities, Associate Dean Patty Chaya told the College’s Board of Trustees last Monday evening, October 7, 2013.

For its monthly meeting, the Board met at the Lima Campus Center which is located just one mile north of Lima on route 15A at 7285 Gale Road.

In sharing a lengthy list of interesting partnerships that have developed in the past few years, Dean Chaya also introduced key community leaders who spoke about Lima Campus Center’s impressive contributions to the region. Peter Yendell, Town of Lima supervisor, expressed his appreciation for Lima Campus Center hosting one of Lima’s election polling stations. In addition, he believes the Lima Campus will be the perfect destination for the northern terminus of a newly established shared use footpath. Special grant funding has been requested for this project in 2014.

Laura Lane, president and CEO of the Livingston Chamber of Commerce also shared her enthusiasm for continued partnerships with the Lima Campus Center to advance business connections and programs that support the economic growth of the region as well as workforce development through the College’s BEST (Business and Employee Skills Training) Center.

Additionally, the staff of Lima Campus Center as well as a student and several faculty members spoke about many of the special events and opportunities that have occurred. From the 2012 Civil War Encampment to a recent Home School Information Night, the school counselor luncheon to parties on the patio, and Kids College, which attracted more than 80 kindergarten through 6th graders last year—the Center has become an integral part of the Lima community.

“While student success remains our primary focus, community outreach plays an essential role in our collective efforts at the Lima Campus Center,” Dean Chaya said. “While welcoming and assisting students of all ages—from high school students, home school students and adult learners who may have not been in a classroom for quite some time, we are also very excited to welcome business and community leaders and aid in their efforts to ensure and expand the region’s economic success.”

In other business Monday, the Board of Trustees:

Heard William Emm, Executive Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness report that the College is considering Peace Officer status for GCC’s director of Campus Safety. In the coming months, the Board will consider some of the benefits the new status offers to the position and to overall safety of GCC’s seven campus locations.
