What is ILLiad Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services allow members of the college community to access materials from other libraries.  It is also the system used by campus center and Online Learning students, faculty, and staff to request in-house materials to be sent for pick-up at the campus centers. More specific information about campus center and Online Learning material requests.

GCC's Alfred C. O'Connell library cooperates with libraries nation-wide to lend and borrow materials to support research and education.

Requests for books, cds, dvds, and other physical items may take anywhere from 3 to 15 business days to fulfill.  Requests for articles are delivered electronically, and may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to fulfill.

Because of the potential variability in fulfillment times, please request your items as early as possible before your assignment deadline.

Other Questions?

  • Who can use GCC's ILL service?
Interlibrary Loan services are available to all currently registered GCC students, faculty, faculty emeritus, staff, administrators, and members of the GCC Board of Trustees. Because we are unable to mail items directly to patrons, Online Learners who are not affiliated with a specific GCC campus may only request interlibrary loan materials that can be delivered electronically (i.e., articles).
GCC's ILL service is not available to: community patrons, visitors, Open Access students, or Empire State College students.  If you are a member of any of these groups, we recommend that you use your public library's ILL services.
  • What can be borrowed?
Books, DVDs, music CDs, copies of articles and government documents are generally available for borrowing.
  • What cannot be borrowed?
Reference books, textbooks, rare or historical items, entire issues of journals, current "bestsellers," and genealogical materials are generally not available for ILL borrowing.
  • For how long may I borrow an item?
Books, etc.: The borrowing period is determined by the lending library, so this time period varies. When an item arrives from a lending library, the due date is assigned, and written on the item label. Some lending libraries will allow renewals for additional lending time. You may request a renewal through the ILLiad online system. You will be notified via GCC email as to the status of your renewal request. You may also contact the ILL Department at (585) 345-6922 before the book is due to see if a renewal is possible.
Articles: An electronic(pdf) version of your article will be delivered to your ILLiad account. You will be notified via GCC email that your article is available and will be given further instructions for retrieving it. Electronically delivered articles will be available to you for 30 days only. We suggest that you print out or download your article when you first view it as a safeguard against losing access later.
  • How many items can I borrow?
You may have 10 active requests at any one time.  Once you have returned one or more of your items, you can keep requesting items until you reach the maximum 10 items again.
  • Is there a fee?
Fees are rare, but possible. They are determined by the lending library. If there is the potential for a fee, we will contact you via GCC email to ask if you are willing to pay the fee. If you do not respond to this email, we will not process your request.
  • I need to place a request and I was told to create an ILLiad account. What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the online interlibrary loan service used here at GCC. The system will allow you to quickly and easily place requests for items from other libraries and then track the status of your request.. In order to place interlibrary loan requests or request an item be delivered to your campus center, you will need to create an ILLiad account. To create your account, login with your GCC network username and password, and fill in the New User Registration page.
Campus Center and Online Learning students: for information about requesting materials see the FAQ on Campus Centers and Online Learning Library Services. Please contact Nicki Lerczak for more assistance.
  • What if I forget login username and password?
You can use either your Genesis username and password or your Netid.  If you need help with these accounts, contact the GCC Help Desk at 1-866-614-5004 (Toll Free).
  • How long does it take?
An average of 1-2 weeks for book loans and less than a week for article copies.
  • How will I be notified that my item has arrived?
We will contact you via GCC email when your item is ready for pickup. If we are unable to obtain the requested item, we will notify you via GCC email as soon as possible.
  • Returning Items & Borrower Responsibilities:
Please return books obtained via ILLiad on or before the date due. Because this is a special loan from another library, it is important to return books promptly so that we can maintain good relationships with lending libraries.
Books borrowed through ILL are the property of the lending library, not the GCC library. Borrowers are responsible for any ILL items that are lost or damaged, and must pay any and all replacement & processing costs, as determined by the lending library. If you do not return your material on time, you will be blocked from using ILLiad and from checking out items from the GCC library. A transcript hold may also be applied to your GCC account.
  • Copyright Law Compliance Warning:
All Interlibrary Loan requests will be subject to the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) which governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
