What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services allow members of the college community to access materials from other libraries. Genesee's Alfred C. O'Connell library cooperates with libraries nation-wide to lend and borrow materials to support research and education.

I was told to create an ILLiad account. What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is the online interlibrary loan service used here at GCC. The system will allow you to quickly and easily place requests for items from other libraries and then track the status of your request.. In order to place interlibrary loan requests or request an item be delivered to your campus center, you will need to create an ILLiad account. To create your account, go to the ILLiad logon page and click the link for First-Time Users. There you will be given further instructions for creating your account.

Who can use Genesee's ILL service?
Interlibrary Loan services are available to all currently registered Genesee Community College students, Genesee faculty, faculty emeritus, staff, administrators, and members of the Genesee Board of Trustees.

Genesee's ILL service is not available to: community patrons, visitors, Open Access students, or Empire State College students. ILL services can be obtained through public libraries.

What can be borrowed?
Books, copies of periodical articles and government documents are generally available for borrowing.

What cannot be borrowed?
Reference books, textbooks, rare or historical items, entire issues of journals, current "bestsellers," and genealogical materials are generally not available for ILL borrowing.

Please note: We cannot request materials that we own, so please check the Genesee Catalog carefully, or ask a librarian for assistance to verify that we do not own the item.

How long can I borrow an item?
Books, etc.: The borrowing period is determined by the lending library, so this time period varies. When an item arrives from a lending library, the due date is assigned, and you will be able to clearly see this date when you pickup the material. Some lending libraries will allow renewals for additional lending time. You may request a renewal through the ILLiad online system. You will be notified via GCC email as to the status of your renewal request. You may also contact the ILL Department at (585) 345-6922 before the book is due to see if a renewal is possible.
Articles: You will receive electronic(pdf) versions of your article requests. You will be notified via GCC email that your article is available and will be given further instructions informing you how to obtain the article.

Is there a fee?
Fees are rare, but possible. They are determined by the lending library. If there is the potential for a fee, we will contact you via GCC email to ask if you are willing to pay the fee. If you do not respond to this email, we will not process your request.

How and where do I submit an ILL request?
All requests for items must be placed within GCC's ILLiad Interlibrary Loan online service.
You will need to create an ILLiad account before you can place any requests. Creating your ILLiad account is simple and will only take a minute or two. Click here to go to the ILLiad logon page and create your ILLiad account.

Off-campus and distance learning students: for information about requesting materials see the FAQ at the Distance Learning Library Services home page. Please contact the Instructional Services Librarian, Nicki Lerczak, at (585) 343-0055 Ext. 6418 or email: NJLerczak, for more assistance.

How long does it take?
An average of 1-2 weeks for book loans and less than a week for article copies.

How will I be notified that my item has arrived?
We will contact you via GCC email when your item is ready for pickup. If we are unable to obtain the requested item, we will also notify you via GCC email as soon as possible.

Returning Items & Borrower Responsibilities:
Please return books obtained via ILL to the Circulation Desk on or before the date due. Because this is a special loan from another library, it is important to return books promptly so that we can maintain good relationships with lending libraries.

Books borrowed through ILL are the property of the lending library, not the Genesee library. Borrowers are responsible for any ILL items that are lost or damaged, and must pay any and all replacement & processing costs, as determined by the lending library.

Copyright Law Compliance Warning:
All Interlibrary Loan requests will be subject to the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) which governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
