Do I need a GCC library card?

No, but you need a Genesee Community College ID card. Your Genesee ID card will have a barcode on the back, and this barcode will work as your "library card," allowing you to access library materials and services. You can obtain an ID card at your Campus Center office or at the Student Services office at the Batavia Campus. More info on new ID cards.

Can I get library materials without coming to the Batavia campus?

Yes. All Faculty, Staff and GCC Students who don't attend classes at the main campus in Batavia can get books, articles and other materials sent to their nearest campus center.

Electronic delivery of articles in PDF format is also available for most requests. Select your preferred delivery option on the Article Request Form.

How do I begin?

Search the library catalog for books and/or search the periodical databases for articles.  Once you find something you would like to request print out or copy down the important information (author, title, publisher/periodical, pages (if it's an article)) and go to the appropriate request form.   If you are requesting an article, make sure it's not already available to you as full-text online. If you see the word "text" you can simply print it out.

How do I submit a request?

You can request a copy of an article by using the article request form, or you can request a book or audiovisual material (videos are for faculty only) by using the book request form.

How long will it take to get my request filled?

If GCC owns the item: 2-4 days.

If GCC doesn't own the item: An average of 1-3 weeks for book loans and 3-10 days for article copies.

Is there a limit to the number of requests I can place?

In order to serve all of our patrons, there is a limit of 5 requests per course per semester per student limit for items that GCC doesn't own.

How and where do I get my items?

    For Articles:
  • We receive periodical articles from our sources in 2 formats; paper photocopy and PDF. We can deliver articles to you as printed paper documents or electronically as PDFs via the internet. You'll select the delivery option you prefer on the Article Request Form.
  • If you select to receive a paper copy we will send the article to your designated campus center (for you to pick up in person.) Or, if you are too remote from a campus center, we will send the article through the U.S. mail to an address you provide us.
  • All paper copy articles are yours to keep - you don't need to return them.
  • If you select the electronic delivery option, we will post the PDF document on a web site, and send you an email with a link and instructions about accessing it. To use this option you must give us your GCC email address, e.g., nwarren@genesee.edu. Non-GCC emails will not work.
  • Electronically delivered articles will be available to you for 14 days or 5 views only. So, you'll want to check your GCC email frequently. We also suggest you print out your article
  • when you first view it as a safeguard against losing access later.

    For Books and other materials:
  • We will only send books and other materials to your designated campus center. When you've made a request, check with your campus center to see if your materials have arrived.
  • No books or other materials will be sent to your home. We are not able to ship items elsewhere, so if you are too remote from a campus center to pick up materials, you will not be able to request books and other materials. (We suggest that you visit a library near your home to find materials. An academic library, such as a college or university, will probably have the kinds of materials you need.)
  • You are responsible for picking up these materials from the campus center and returning them to the campus center by their due date.

How long may I keep loaned books and audiovisual materials?

See complete library loan policies

If GCC owns the item: Usually 3 weeks with renewals.

If GCC doesn't own the item: Usually 3 weeks with no renewals.

Can I renew items?

Most items can be renewed by calling the Circulation Desk at (585) 345-6834 during normal library hours. Many items can also be renewed online through the library catalog. From inside the catalog, click on Login to Your Account near the top of the screen. Enter your library barcode number from the back of your college ID or library card and click Log On. Then click View Your Account near the top of the page to view your account details; from there you will find options to renew your borrowed items. Items that are overdue by a week or more must be renewed in person in the library.
