Paralegal @ Genesee

Genesee's Paralegal program prepares today's students to be tomorrow's legal professionals with:

  • low student/teacher ratios
  • daytime, late afternoon or evening classes
  • hands-on learning
  • internships
  • access to advanced technology

Genesee's Paralegal Program is approved by the American Bar Association and is a member of the American Association for Paralegal Education. The program is selective, with a limited number of openings.

Entrance Requirements: All new applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • Satisfactory completion of two years of high school math and two years of high school science. Two years of a foreign language is strongly recommended.
  • Completion of all pretesting as required by the College prior to admission, including tests from math, reading and English placement.
  • A grade point average of B in high school course work or a ranking in the top quarter of the applicant's high school graduating class.

Other factors considered: college entrance test scores; work experience in a legal environment; or a written examination as set forth below.

All transfer applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum 2.75 GPA for courses that are to be credited toward the Paralegal Studies A.A.S. degree.
  • Completion of all pretesting as required by the College prior to admission, including tests for math, reading and English placement.

Program Articulation: SUNY University at Buffalo for Legal Studies, Syracuse University and Hilbert College for Paralegal baccalaureate degree programs.

Procedures for Transferring Paralegal Credits Earned at another institution of higher education:

  1. GCC will not accept more than 3 legal specialty courses for transfer credit;
  2. The proffered courses must have been taken at recognized academically accredited institution of higher education in a degree/certificate granting program;
  3. No student will receive more credit hours for any legal specialty course transferred into GCC than is granted for such equivalent course at GCC, and if the proffered course has fewer credit hours than the GCC equivalent course then said proffered course shall not be considered for transfer credit at GCC;
  4. No legal specialty course shall be given any transfer credit until it is thoroughly reviewed by the Program Director;
  5. In reviewing the proffered course the Program Director shall consider the course textbook, the course student learning outcomes, the course instructor’s credentials, the course assignments and the course tests;
  6. The credit granting institution of higher education where the proffered course was taken must have been fully accredited by a bona fide academic agency of higher education comparable to that which accredits GCC, at the time the proffered course was taken and successfully completed by the student;
  7. The student must have passed the proffered legal specialty course with a grade of no less than “C” or its equivalent; and
  8. This procedure shall be subject to the residence requirement governing the granting of academic degrees at GCC, as published in the College Catalog.
