• Diversity in Modern Life: Moving from Policy to Practice – Diversity has become an overused word in public discourse. Practical application, as opposed to theoretical models, can be difficult to achieve and often results in misguided efforts at political correctness, rather than true inclusion. This talk focuses on case studies of what works and does not work, as well as discussing the aspects of diversity that are often avoided. Veterans, those with strong religious convictions, and those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, will be highlighted as social identity groups who often are not included in diversity initiatives. – Paul Brew, Adjunct Faculty in World History
• Vice and Sexuality and Law: The Evolution of Our Views on Sexuality From 1900 to Today – In today’s American culture, we are surrounded by public discourse that revolves around sexuality. Messages from every spectrum tell us how to view sex and vice and claim to be rooted in history. But, what are the inherited values of Western New York and how have our laws evolved around sexuality? The evolution of the legal codes of New York State from the late 1800’s to today and the arrest records detailing crime suggest that we should remember the words of the old song, “It ain’t necessarily so,” rather than our modern conceptions of what society did or did not care about when it came to policing sexuality and vice.– Paul Brew, Adjunct Faculty in World History
