Classroom Policies
Cell Phones
Receiving or sending cell phone calls or text messages in classrooms, computer labs, or library is inappropriate and impolite. Please turn them off, except in emergency cases and with the instructor’s permission.
Class Attendance & Participation
Regular attendance, as specified by the instructor, is expected of all students. Distance Learning course participation, as specified by the instructor, is expected of all students and may be considered for grading purposes the same as "attendance." Extended absence/non-participation (due to illness or injury) should be reported to your instructor (and/or to the Vice President for Student Services) immediately.
Classroom Behavior & Civility
Being a Genesee student requires appropriate adult behavior and respect for others. Instructors can set classroom rules of conduct, require adherence to standards of civility appropriate to learning, and have the right to remove anyone for disruption or obstruction of those standards, or for violation of any law or College policy. The Student Code of Conduct can be found at http://www.genesee.edu/students/handbook.cfm
Course Withdrawal
Faculty do not withdraw students for non-attendance. It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw, in writing, from a course prior to the withdrawal deadlines (see Important Dates above).
Plagiarism & Cheating
Plagiarism is the dual act of presenting and claiming the words, ideas, data, or creations of others as one’s own. Plagiarism may be intentional--as in a false claim of authorship--or unintentional--as in a failure to document information sources using MLA, APA, CBE, or other style sheets or manuals adopted by instructors in the College. Presenting ideas in the exact or nearly exact wording as found in primary or secondary sources constitutes plagiarism, as does patching together paraphrased statements without in-text citation. Each faculty member will determine appropriate responses to plagiarism. Disciplinary action resulting from confirmed instances of plagiarism and/or cheating may include receipt of a failing grade on an assignment or the course, removal of a student from a class, or expulsion of a student from the College.
Smoking
All Genesee Community College buildings are designated smoke-free.
Time Expectations
For every hour in class, successful college-level work requires about two hours for out-of-class work: reading, writing, research, labs, discussion, field work, etc. In time demands, a 15-credit load would be about equivalent to working a full-time job—for Summer and Mod 1 & 2 courses this is doubled due to the shortened academic term.
