2011 Honorees

Anthony CoreyWILLIAM VAN GUNDY
Coach and Instructor of Physical Education, 1984-2000

William “Bill” Van Gundy had over 300 career wins with the men’s basketball team throughout the mid eighties and nineties. Under his coaching, the men’s teams won five Penn-York championships and Van Gundy was awarded NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year three times. Coach Van Gundy also coached three 1000 point scorers. In 1988, Bill was awarded the National Association of Basketball Coaches Merit Award. In 2002, he was inducted into the New York State Basketball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame and in 2005 he was awarded the “Guardian of the Game” award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

 

KNOCHEPETRA (PÀNKOVÀ) KNOCHE
Women’s Basketball

Petra (Pànkovà) Knoche was an accomplished women’s basketball player scoring 1021 career points. She was a first team All Region player in the 1995-1996 season and the Region III Player of the Year in the 1996-1997 season. She also led the women’s basketball team to two national championship appearances. She went on to play basketball at Cleveland State University where she earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in Communication. She is currently the assistant director of the International Students and Scholars Office at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She is active in her local community and has spent several years assistant coaching the women’s basketball team at Oakland University.

 

 

LLOYD HULINGLLOYD HULING
Men’s Basketball and Coach
Class of 1977

The late Lloyd Huling was an outstanding athlete and coach at GCC. He was named an All Region Player for both basketball seasons and had 323 points and 229 rebounds while at Genesee. He was awarded the Douglas E. Evans award in 1977 and the GCC Coaches award for 1976-1977. He graduated from GCC with a degree in Political Science. He went on to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology. During his high school years at Attica Central School, Lloyd held the high scoring average in basketball from 1975-1996 and averaged 21 points per game. In addition to his player honors, he was the assistant women’s basketball coach where he led the team to their first Region III title. He also served as the head women’s softball coach at GCC.

 

CYNDY (MERLAU) HYNESCYNDY (MERLAU) HYNES
Women’s Basketball and Volleyball
Class of 1976

Cyndy (Merlau) Hynes was an All-Region Player in both women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. She led both teams to national championship appearances in both basketball and volleyball. She went on to attend Ithaca College where she played volleyball, basketball and softball and was the captain of the volleyball and basketball teams. Cyndy is currently a physical education teacher at Candor Elementary School in Candor, NY. She has held the position for 33 years. During her teaching career, she has coached the entire time, at all levels of sports including little league, pee wee basketball, JV and varsity volleyball and basketball. Throughout her tremendous career she has been awarded with several coaching honors.

 

2002-2003 MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM2002-2003 MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM

The 2002-2003 men’s basketball team was the first division II team ever to go undefeated in Region III with a record of 32-0. The team made an appearance at the NJCAA national tournament in Danville, IL. Members of the team included: Rob King, Brian Jackson, Deverin Dillion, Jonas Kuntz, Melvin Council, Joe Robinson, Vilius Raulusevicius, Mark Buckenmeyer, Isiah Ewing, Darnell Jackson, Akim Neverson and Terry George. The team was coached by Mike von Schiller and assisted by Don Bovenzi.
