This is the most frequent service offered by the Counseling Center. In individual counseling a student works one-on-one with a counselor in an effort to define the student’s concerns and develop a strategy to address the problems. This is a collaborative effort between the counselor and student.
Concerned about a friend or significant other:
If you have a friend who is in distress and is asking you help and you do not know where to turn, please remember we are always to help. All you need to do is call us at (585)343-0055 ext. 6219 or come to our offices C209 to make an appointment. We’ll sit down with you, listen, and work out a plan of action to assist your friend.
Life sometimes hands us situations that are unexpected or traumatic. The staff of the Counseling Center is ready to offer immediate assistance to students who feel that they need to talk now. All you have to do is come to the Counseling Center in C209 let us know what you need, and we will do our best to arrange a time to meet that day.
There may be times when you as a student, faculty member, or staff member may have concerns about someone who is in your class or you advise. We encourage you to contact us about such students, and we can:
- Discuss the nature of your concerns about the student
- Discuss options to deal with your concerns
- Facilitate a referral to the Counseling Center if indicated
Counselors in the center are available to students, faculty, and staff who may want the staff to do an introductory lecture about the Counseling Center and/or present on a specific issue of concern. The latter might focus on such areas as crisis management, problems in group dynamics and interpersonal communications, or other issues affecting the campus environment.
