Police Officers are the first line of defense in our society and often are called upon to handle a multitude of issues. Officers need to be enforces, mediators, counselors, referees, social workers, and public servants.

Why GCC?

Students at GCC study factors which influence and shape the delivery of police services in American communities. You will learn contemporary issues including styles of policing, police role, expectations and conflict, career concepts and professionalism, community participation and accountability.

Degree Types

Criminal Justice: Policing Concentration (AAS)

AAS Program Learning Outcomes (PLO)

Upon completion of the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree in Criminal Justice, the student will demonstrate the following through identified student learning outcomes in courses:

  1. Evaluate how the two analytical approaches (Due Process Model and Crime Control Model) are utilized within the criminal justice system.
  2. Assess the roles of the three main components of the criminal justice system (police, courts and corrections).
  3. Apply an ethical analysis to problems concerning the criminal justice system.
  4. Explain the international dimensions of criminal justice related issues.
  5. Apply administrative principles to criminal justice issues within the three main components of the criminal justice system.
  6. Utilize criminal justice related technology in support of an inquiry or investigation.
  7. Communicate effectively within a criminal justice setting

POLICING CONCENTRATION

  1. Describe the basic structural organizations of police departments.
  2. Demonstrate proper investigative techniques utilized in a crime scene.
  3. Explain the basic concepts of how departments police communities.

Transfer Opportunities

Starting at GCC saves many students and their families thousands of dollars in tuition. With an A.S. or A.A. degree you will be able to seamlessly transfer within the SUNY network of 64 college and universities as well as to many 4-year private institutions. GCC’s A.S. and A.A. programs were developed as part of the SUNY seamless transfer initiative allowing students to complete the first two years of a bachelor’s degree as a freshman and a sophomore at a community college, then seamlessly transfer to a SUNY four-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree. Please reference the SUNY Transfer Pathways for degree programs to learn about any campus specific requirements. Visit the SUNY Core Course Finder to plan out the courses you should complete to transfer to a 4-year SUNY School.

If you are planning to transfer to a 4-year private institution you should work with our Transfer Services office to learn about possible articulation agreements and pathways that exist for many or our degree programs. Some GCC A.A.S. programs also have transfer opportunities.
