First Annual John Gardner Conference
at Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY
April 3 & 4, 1998
The conference schedule, which we tried to stick to.
The registrationc overed three meals, a trip to University of Rochester's Special Collection, entrance to all sessions, Robert Morace's keynote address, an opportunity to see Gardner's play Days of Vengeance and much more.
Special presenters and speakers:
The keynote was Professor Robert Morace.
Featured presenters included Liz Rosenberg, Jan Quackenbush, and Susan Thornton.
A complete list of presenters and their papers can be found by following this link.
Where to stay in Batavia:
We made arrangements with Day's Inn for special conference rates. They offered rooms (single or double!) for $42 a night. The rate included a continental breakfast, so for those of you coming in early or staying an extra day, you can count on one meal.
*Days Inn, 200 Oak St., Batavia (585) 343-1440

And other items of interest:
The two nearest major airports are located about 45 minutes from here in Buffalo and Rochester. Toronto International may be the least expensive route for some, but it is a 3 hour drive. We provided transportation to and from Rochester and Buffalo airports, as well as transportation from the Days Inn. We are within an hour's drive of Niagara Falls and of Letchworth State Park.
Approximately 20 interested registrants visited the John Gardner Collection at the University of Rochester. Some participants, using our map, took a Sunlight Dialogues tour of Batavia. The Poka-Dot, Miss Batavia Diner, and Red Ossier restaurants--all mentioned in Sunlight Dialogues--are still open for business; in fact a fair number of attendees feasted on white hots or beef on wick
His play, Days of Vengeance, was performed by Bette Smith as part of the conference.
The entire conference was videotaped; these videos are available for restricted use in the GCC library only. We are
in the process of creating a "lending video" containing those presentations that speakers have agreed to share on a broader scale, providing no copies are made.
The proceedings of the conference are being published on our website at
www.sunygenesee.cc.ny.us/gardner/presents.htm.
