WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES?
Genesee Community College is committed to the philosophy that social,
cultural, and recreational activities are an important part of your educational
experience and contribute significantly to the quality of your life on campus.
WHAT IS A CO-CURRICULAR RESUME?
The co-curricular resume program is another resource which encourages
students to plan their future educational and/or career objectives. This program
offers the students a method of recording activity outside of the classroom
and the skills learned through their participation. The resume will supply the
students with an official document which represents co-curricular involvement
and leadership experiences while at Genesee Community College. Students who
become involved in the many opportunities available on campus tend to have more
fun, enjoy greater academic success, and gain experience and confidence while
applying classroom knowledge to a variety of situations.
WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?
The co-curricular resume program provides you with the advantage of
being able to identify, develop, and articulate skills you have earned while
attending Genesee Community College. The resume will be another way for employers
and admissions offices to evaluate you as a prospective employee or student.
Research indicates that employers and four-year schools want to see more than
grades or a diploma; they want to know what sets you apart from other applicants.
Your co-curricular resume can give you the “competitive edge” as
you pursue your academic and career goals.
WHAT SHOULD I RECORD?
Co-curricular involvement is the combination of college-related activities
beyond the classroom and the benefits associated with those experiences. Involvement
includes, but is not limited to, participation in clubs and organizations, leadership
projects, paraprofessional work experiences, intercollegiate athletics, workshops,
seminars or conferences, and documented off-campus volunteer work..
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM?
There are five basic components of the co-curricular resume program:
- Leadership Activities: Leadership positions held in clubs and organizations
- Educational Development: Learning experiences (eg: Student Development Series, camp, conferences, workshops)
- Participation in Campus Activities: membership and involvement in clubs/organizations, college committees, athletics, intramurals, Fine Arts, Global Education, Lunch Bunch, etc.)
- Paraprofessional Work Experiences: Work-related opportunities (eg: Workstudy, residential life, coop/internships)
- Honors, Awards, and Recognition: Formal recognition of outstanding contributions/achievements
WHERE DO I BEGIN?
The Student Activities office will provide the necessary direction and material
needed for you to begin your documentation of your co-curricular experience.
This program is a co-sponsored initiative with the Career and Transfer Center
Office and is open to all Genesee Community College students. Envision your
dreams and begin your path to success today.
