Head Coach: Robert "Skip" Sherman
Sherman started his coaching career in 1991 where he coached the boy's varsity baseball team at Arkport Central School until 1995. In 1995 he joined the coaching staff at Alfred State College where he was the pitching coach. He was an important key to Alfred State College start of their baseball program. In the five years at Alfred, he was part of a team that won two region three championships. After leaving Alfred, Sherman spent one season at Ashland University (NCAA 2) where he was responsible for recruiting and coaching first base as an assistant.
Sherman joined the staff at Genesee Community College in 2003 and has proven to be a huge asset to the Cougar Baseball Program. Sherman led the team to its first ever WNYAC Championship in 2005. In the spring of 2007, Sherman led his team to its first #1 seed in its Region III tournament. Sherman was also awarded Coach of the Year by Region III and by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Under the direction of Sherman the team has broken almost every record at Genesee Community College and had its highest national ranking last season finishing #11 in the country.
Sherman is also the director of the popular community Kids Night Out program which brings on an average of 140 youngsters to the college each month to promote physical activity in youth. He also runs a number of camps throughout the year.
Sherman received his Bachelor's degree from Empire State College in Sport Management and is currently working on his Graduate degree from the United States Sports Academy in Sport Science. Assistant Coach - Rich Kolmetz
Coach Kolmetz is recognized as one of the local leading personal on hitting. He has led the team in hitting instruction and has made the Cougar Baseball teams hitting stats ranking in the top 20 in the last two seasons. He begins his fourth season as an assistant coach at Genesee Community College.
Coach Kolmetz has been an active player in the game of baseball for over thirty-five years and has won a number of batting and homerun titles. He was part of two teams that won the over 40 Men's League World Series in 2000 and 2002. He also played professional softball for the Rochester Zeniths and Pace Electronics or the United States Softball Association. Kolmetz also appeared in the movie "The Natural" as a baseball extra.
Kolmetz received his Bachelor's degree from Hobart College in Economics where he was also a two-sport athlete in Baseball and Basketball. He lives in Byron with his wife Pam.
Assistant Coach - Tony Ray
Coach Ray is entering his third season as an assistant responsible for coaching first base and other administrative duties. Coach Ray also is responsible for off-season training for the Cougar baseball team.
Coach Ray played at Monroe Community College where he won the Region Three Tournament Most Valuable Player Award. Ray finished his career at Genesee Community College where he led the team in a number of offensive categories. During his playing career, Ray was a two-time All Conference player and a second team all region player. He is a graduate of Batavia High School was he continues to hold the record for Home Runs and Runs Batted In. In 1993, Ray was a member of the Gold Medal Empire State team for baseball. He also was a three time all star in semi pro football.
Assistant Coach - Bob Shaffer
Coach Shaffer begins his second year as the Cougars Pitching Coach. He lead last years pitching staff to one of the top staff in junior college baseball.
Coach Shaffer was a pitcher at Monroe Community College where he participated in the Junior College World Series. After receiving a scholarship to Florida International University (NCAA 2) he had a career record of 19-3, and pitched in two regional finals winning both. Shaffer did spend two three years as an assistant coach at Finger Lakes Community College.
Shaffer has taught business in high school for 22 years and has spent the last 16 at Attica Central School. He lives in Caledonia with his wife Elana and his two sons Evan and Brett.
