    Men's Baseball: Fall 2009

    Program Overview

The Genesee Community College men's baseball team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region III, Division II level and is a member of the Western New York Athletic Conference. The team plays over 20 games in the fall, including its conference schedule and tournament at the end. In the spring, the team has the most difficult schedule among any of the other Division II programs in Region III. Skip Sherman is starting his fifth year as head coach. He is responsible for the team's only conference championship (2005), as well as its highest ranking ever in school history in 2007 (11th in the nation). He was awarded the Region III Coach of the Year for 2007 and was recognized in January 2008 at the American Baseball Coaches Association as Region III National Coach of the Year.

Seven Cougars earn WNYAC All-Conference Honors in Baseball for the fall!

After capturing the schools second ever Western New York Athletic Conference (WYNAC) Fall Baseball Championship with a 5-4 victory over rival Monroe Community College earlier this month the honors keep coming for the Cougars with seven student-athletes selected to the All-Conference teams.

Five Cougars including pitcher Greg Rapp (Cambridge, ON), Catcher Eitan Maoz (Ottawa, ON), Infielder Mike Hackett (Pavilion, NY), Infielder John Polinious (Curacao, N.A.), and designated hitter Ed Kohout (Clarence, NY) earned 1st team honors, while outfielder Shayne Herald (LeRoy, NY) was selected to the 2nd team and outfielder Jacob Featherstone (Ajax, ON) received honorable mention.

This fall the Cougars won 11 straight games on their way to the championship title after dropping to Monroe CC in their first double header of the season, finishing 11-2 overall. Rapp went 3-0 with a 0.32 ERA including the win in the championship game where he had 5 strike outs over 3 innings of relief; on the season Rapp had 16 strike outs and only allowed one earned run.

Maoz was impressive behind the plate defensively throwing out 92% of potential base stealers while hitting .280 and having a .407 on base percentage; Hackett was again one of the most consistent hitters for the Cougars collecting 15 hits for a .348 average; Polinious put together a solid freshman fall hitting .394 with 11 runs scored and only one error in the field; Kohout was the teams number one starting pitcher this fall and also impressed at the plate hitting .341 with 12 RBI’s and 22 total bases - he has verbally committed to Division 1 LeMoyne next year.

Herald was solid defensively in the outfield while hitting .316 with a .477 on base percentage and .537 slugging percentage. Featherstone had a .270 average on the season, including going 3-4 with two runs scored in the championship game.

“I’m proud of this teams accomplishments” Head Coach Skip Sherman said on having 7 Cougars selected, “they are a fun team to watch play”. GCC placed the most members on the 12 man first team ahead of Monroe who had three selections, Alfred State who had two selections, Niagara CCC and Erie CC who each had one selection respectively.
