Occupational Therapy Assistant
The OTA Program is closing in Spring 2009 and is no longer accepting students.
Who will you be helping?
As an Occupational Therapy Assistant you will work with people of all ages
who have disabilities such as learning disabilities, autism, cerebral palsy,
stroke, head injury, spinal cord injury, arthritis, and mental illness. These
difficulties could be due to physical injury, developmental disability, the
aging process, or psychosocial disability.
How will you make a difference in people's lives?
You will help people develop the skills they need to do the day-to-day tasks that most people take for granted-tasks such as eating, dressing, doing housework, performing their job, understanding their schoolwork, or simply interacting with others at work and play.
Where will you work?
A great many opportunities for Occupational Therapy Assistants are currently going unfilled nationwide and in Western New York. You might find yourself working in a hospital, nursing home, health care clinic, school, patients' homes, or a day treatment setting.
How do you become an Occupational Therapy Assistant?
You can complete the Associate in Applied Science Degree Program (A.A.S.) in Occupational Therapy in as little as two years of full-time study, or you can choose a more flexible part-time class schedule for a large part of the curriculum. This program includes four on-site internships at health care facilities in your region (we currently have over 100 clinic sites!), where you will observe and work in an Occupational Therapy department. Genesee's Occupational Therapy Assistant program is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).
What's so special about being an Occupational Therapy Assistant?
You will be helping people with functional difficulties to be more self-sufficient, to function productively in the home and on the job, and to live independent, satisfying lives.
