HUS251 - Developmental Disabilities: Strategies and Applications
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Introduces and applies principles of learning and motivation to the various disabilities. Covers treatment strategies through the lifespan of the individual with developmental disabilities. Identifies impact of developmental disabilities on families. Stresses specific skills for facilitating adaptive and cognitive potentials. Studies evaluative processes, behavior modification, treatment care plans, forms of therapy, advocacy and issues related to community integration. Prerequisite: HUS 250.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
1.Discuss in writing at least 8 issues and concerns of professionals working in the field of exceptionalities.

2.Identify and define in writing at least 3 issues of an exceptional individual in each disability area (mental retardation, learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disorders, communication, vision and hearing impairments, physical and other health impairments, profound and severe disabilities, gifted and talented individuals).

3.*For each of the following areas, define in writing the current best practices for working with the adult with developmental disabilities with an 80% accuracy:
a.assessment
b.therapy
c.placements

4.Demonstrate at least 4 issues impacting on the family of an exceptional individual (roles, social implications, and communication between parents and professionals) using role-playing and in writing.

5.Define in writing at least 3 differences between the role of caregiver and the role of parent.

6.Discuss in writing at least 3 factors to consider in building positive community relationships with exceptional individuals.

7.Identify in writing at least 5 traditional theoretical approaches to learning and behavior.

8.Describe in writing 3 factors necessary for a professional to be an agent of change with emphasis on ways to develop empowerment strategies with the exceptional individual and to facilitate appropriate policy planning in many aspects of life in the community.

9.Identify in writing at least 5 agencies serving exceptional individuals and define at least 2 services of each.

10.List at least 5 necessary components in planning a leisure time activity.

11.Develop in writing 10 ideas for recreational and leisure time activities.

12.Identify and discuss in writing at least 2 components of each of the following critical issues working with the exceptional adult: sexual relationships, marriage, decision making, parenting skills, HIV/STD, substance use and abuse, physical and mental abuse.

13.State in writing at least 5 employment and/or day treatment options for the adult with developmental disabilities.

14.Identify and define in writing at least 3 legal issues related to the adult with developmental disabilities.

15.Describe at least 3 ways in writing the community can be involved in the integration of exceptional adult programs.

16.State in writing 4 factors in curriculum planning (age appropriate) for the adult with developmental disabilities and define the importance of realism in goal setting.

17.Identify in writing at least 4 steps for writing an age appropriate behavioral objective plan for an adult with developmental disabilities.

18.Define in writing each of the following best practices for working with the adult with developmental disabilities with an 80% accuracy:
a.assessment
b.therapy
c.placements

*This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
