|HUS114 - Family: Impact of Alcohol and Drugs|
Catalog Description: Analyzes the effects of alcoholism and drug abuse on the family. Emphasizes family roles, characteristics of children of alcoholics and substance abusers, co-dependence theories, adult children of such families and adaptations made individually and socially by family members. [Note: The New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services has reviewed this course and finds that it is consistent with established standards for alcoholism counselor education and training toward the CASAC credential.] Spring only. Prerequisite: HUS 113 or HED 113.
Lecture: 3 hrs.
Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course as documented through writing, objective testing, case studies, laboratory practice, and/or classroom discussion, the student will be able to:
1. Explain the significance of alcohol/drug abuse as it affects the family system by listing three (3) possible outcomes.
2. Identify five (5) characteristics of codependency within an addictive family system.
3. Explain the significance of the defense mechanisms including denial as it relates to the addicted family system and give five (5) examples.
4. * List and discuss the seven (7) stages of a healthy family.
5. List and discuss Erikson's Stages of Development from birth to late adulthood.
6. Explain and list four (4) ways why living in an addicted family may cause its family members to experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
7. Identify the roles played out and at least eight (8) characteristics of children of addiction.
8. Define enabling in the family, which encourages the addict to continue patterns of addiction, and give at least two (2) examples.
9. Develop assessment skills for identification of addiction and/or codependency issues within a family system and review current assessment tools available.
10. Review a minimum of two (2) case histories and be able to identify at least three (3) key issues in each regarding family issues.
11. List the seven (7) key concepts of viewing the family as the client.
12. Differentiate among the five (5) different family therapy approaches of adults in the addictive/codependent family system and be able to identify two (2) techniques used.
13. Survey considerations in treating related problems of addicts and their families and list the three (3) most common ones.
14. Explain the significance of treatment and mutual-help group involvement in the recovery process of the family members by developing a family treatment care plan from case studies done in class.
15. *Practice the family genogram format with at least two (2) case studies and will be able to diagram them with marked improvement with the second one.
16. Identify mandated child abuse reporting basic requirements.
17. Identify the four (4) factors that contribute to therapeutic change within an addicted/codependent family.
18. View a minimum of three (3) videos/DVDs which depict addicted/codependent families and be able to a critique of them accordingly for roles, behaviors, denial, treatment, mutual-help groups, etc.
19. Discuss at least six (6) counselor personal barriers to providing addiction/codependent treatment services that impact on counselor effectiveness.
20. Increase self-awareness of their own personal needs, biases, and strengths in relation to working with addicts and their families and discuss them in class when appropriate.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
