|HIS211 - New York State History|
Catalog Description: Surveys the development of the peoples of New York state from pre-history to the present. Focuses on the contributions diverse groups and individuals have made to political, social, economic and cultural fabric of New York State, and through this to the United States and global community. Introduces techniques of historical research and critical writing about the history of New York State. Prerequisite: HIS 203 or HIS 204 or a grade of 85 or better on the New York State Regents American history and government examination.
Lecture: 3 hrs.
Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
At the conclusion of the semester, students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities as documented by examinations, papers, oral presentations, class discussions, and
1.Demonstrate knowledge of the basic narrative of American history by answering a set of questions on politics, public policy and society in the context of New York State.*
2.Demonstrate a knowledge of the common institutions in American society by writing a 2-4 page paper or giving a 10 minute oral presentation with outline, showing how the institutional structures of New York State history affected at least two different groups, based upon library research involving a minimum of three sources utilizing online full-text databases(information management.*
3.Demonstrate an understanding of America's evolving relationship with the rest of the world by answering a set of questions that analyze New York State politics, public policy and society in the context of how it impacts American relations with other countries.*
4.Evaluate at least five impacts of industrialization on the development of the New York.
5.Analyze activities the impact of social movements at the local and state level in New York.
6.Analyze at least three of the patterns and processes of immigration and urbanization in New York.
7.Analyze the economic, social and political significance of the periods of political change in New York.
8.Evaluate the role of Native American groups on the development of New York.
9.Analyze the impact of the civil rights movement on the development of New York State society.
10.Demonstrate an understanding of the role that geography plays in the on-going development of New York State.
11.Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret at least four primary sources in New York State history.
12.Demonstrate an understanding of history as an interpretive discipline with a diversity of viewpoints.
* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college.
