HIS207 - American Military History Since 1898
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Surveys the military history of the United States from the Spanish-American War to the present. Examines the development and use of the American armed forces in the context of the political, social, economic, intellectual and technological evolution of the nation. Prerequisite: HIS 203 or HIS 204 or a grade of 85 or better on the New York State Regents American history and government examination.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course as documented through writing, objective testing, case studies, laboratory practice, and/or classroom discussion, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the basic narrative of American military history through an assessment of America's approach to war, the concept of civilian control of the armed forces and the evolution of the various branches of the American military.*
2. Identify the influence of specific global events on the course of modern American military history and then analyze the connections of these events to domestic developments.*
3. Evaluate the role of the military as a national institution and the influence of military affairs on American society.*
4. Discuss at least three current issues facing the American armed forces in their historical context.
5. Compare and contrast the experiences of ordinary soldiers from at least three different wars using primary sources.
6. Analyze the strategies, doctrines and battlefield tactics of American military commanders in at least three different wars through primary and secondary sources.
7. Evaluate history as an interpretative discipline with a diversity of viewpoints through the detection and appraisal for bias and viewpoint within at least three pieces of military history writing.
8. Demonstrate an ability to formulate, organize and defend an historical argument in a written or oral presentation (University of Chicago guide format) based upon library research involving a minimum of three scholarly sources utilizing online full-text databases.

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
