ESL100 - Introduction to Composition and United States Culture
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: A course designed for English as A Second Language learners. Students who pass with a C or higher have developed mastery in grammar appropriate to specific academic purposes and in communication skills. Introduces American culture. Additional laboratory supported practice required weekly. Not open to students with credit in ENG100. Prerequisite: Completion of ENG 091 or ESL 091 with a grade of C or higher, by TOEFL exam or by placement exam.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course as documented through writing, objective testing, case studies, laboratory practice, and/or classroom discussion, the student will be able to:

1.Write and revise a minimum of three 500 word essays, (scoring a C or better) in order to
a.increase familiarity with persuasive and informative discourse, and
b.to increase accuracy and vary range of grammatical structures.

2.Write a minimum of three essays using the word processor to demonstrate basic competency with information literacy skills.

3.Maintain a journal with at least three entries per week in order to develop discipline and engagement in the writing process.

4.Demonstrate proficiency in the use of the English language through the completion of two five-minute oral presentations on American Culture that will be formally evaluated using a standardized rubric.

5. *Show an increase of 10% or more between the pre- and post-diagnostic test scores to measure accuracy in grammar, punctuation and mechanics.

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.


Content Outline:
Review of paragraph writing: unity, coherence, topic sentence, and paragraph development

Essay Writing: thesis development; persuasive discourse; informative discourse; support of topic - examples and details; organization; transitions; word choice; writing conventions - punctuation, spelling, capitalization, grammar, and syntax

American Culture: holidays and festivals; foods; family structure; education; popular culture - magazines, sports, music; multicultural aspects; and literature



Effective Term: Spring 2012
