ENG214 - Introduction to Creative Writing
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Fosters skills in techniques of reading, writing, and analyzing contemporary literature. Students generate creative texts through workshops and engage in both peer and instructor review sessions. Portfolio exam. Online courses require computer knowledge. Prerequisite: ENG102 or ENG105 or permission of the instructor.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful participation and completion of the course, students will be able to:

1.Form and explain in writing their personal preferences or opinions relating to fiction and poetry from both classical and contemporary literature;

2.Define in writing or in oral presentations, the formal elements of narrative - รข?? point of view, plot, character, setting, mood, tone, conflict and resolution in preparation for using those elements in creating their own original work;

3.Write a complete short story that has opening exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and denouement for inclusion in a course portfolio;

4.*Write a poem that creates a specific image, utilizes one or more metaphors, and is written in one of these forms: narrative, epistle, concrete, free verse, or lyric for inclusion in a course portfolio;

5.Create a portfolio that includes evidence of prewriting, writing, revising, and editing as evidence of the student's ability to utilize the writing process.

*This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
