CSN120 - Network Fundamentals
Credits: 4

Catalog Description: Explores computer networks using the OSI and TCP models, network protocols, IP, Ethernet and application services. Uses a combination of lectures and laboratory experiences to analyze protocols, network operations, cabling, routers and switches. Prerequisite: Completion of the Genesee Community College math proficiency.

Lecture: 4 hrs.
Lab: 0 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
Upon successful completion of the course, as documented by exams, projects, discussions, and skill demonstrations, students will be able to:

1. Explain how communication works in data networks and the Internet
2. Recognize the devices and services that are used to support communications across an Internetwork
3. Use and explain network protocol models to explain the layers of communications in data networks
4. Describe the importance of addressing and naming schemes at various layers of data networks
5. Describe the protocols and services provided by the application layer in the OSI and TCP/IP models and describe how this layer operates in various networks
6. Analyze the operations and features of transport layer protocols and services
7. Analyze the operations and feature of network layer protocols and services and explain the fundamental concepts of routing
8. Design, calculate in binary, and apply subnet masks and addresses to fulfill given requirements
9. Describe the operation of protocols at the OSI data link layer and explain how they support communications
10. Explain the role of physical layer protocols and services in supporting communications across data networks
11. Explain fundamental Ethernet concepts such as media, services, and operation
12. Employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices in accordance with stated objectives
13. Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches
14. Use Cisco command-line interface (CLI) commands to perform basic router and switch configuration and verification
15. Analyze the operations and features of common application layer protocols such as HTTP, Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Telnet, and FTP
16. Utilize common network utilities to verify small network operations and analyze data traffic
17. Pass a comprehensive final exam that requires the same level of proficiency as the corresponding industry standard certification exam.*

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
