BIO117 - Introduction to Biotechnology
Credits: 1

Catalog Description: A survey course in the field of biotechnology. Topics include current career opportunities; biotechnology research; industry development and regulation; microbial, plant and animal biotechnology practices; biotechnology's role in modern medicine, agriculture and DNA profiling; bioethics and the impact of biotechnology on society. Includes an introduction to documentation (notebooks), Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Quality Assurance (QA), current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP) and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) Regulations. Prerequisite: BIO104 with a grade of ā€˜Cā€™ or higher or high school Regents biology and Regents chemistry each with a Regents exam grade of 70 or higher.

Lecture: 1 hrs.

Course Student Learning Outcomes (CSLOs):
At the successful conclusion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities as documented by examinations, papers, oral presentations, and/or class discussions.

1.Describe a minimum of 5 important historical events and figures in the development of biotechnology processes during the past century
2.Summarize the general properties of biological cells, including major organelles and their respective functions.
3.Describe the function and basic properties of DNA, RNA and proteins.
4.Explain the principles of recombinant DNA technology, including cloning, DNA sequencing, PCR, cell culture and immunological techniques.
5.Construct a concept map that describes the organization of and the job opportunities found within biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
6.Construct a concept map that describes the drug development process from inception to market.
7.Describe biomanufacturing components including documentation (notebooks), Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Quality Assurance (QA), and current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP).
8.Name and define the operating principles of at least three of the regulatory agencies that approve pharmaceutical products and genetically modified foods.
9.Define intellectual property and patents, and identify what types of biological products can be patented.
10.Identify a minimum of five global and ethical issues that affect decisions made by researchers at biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
11.Plan, assemble and deliver an oral presentation and paper about an instructor-approved biotechnology topic.*

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the Comprehensive Assessment Plan of the college. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment.
