1 Catalog Description: Focuses on the advanced aspects of the martial arts and expands physical and mental aspects of martial arts training. Concentrates on perfecting sparring, kata, and self-defense learned in Beginning Karate. Deepens understanding of historical and philosophical and spiritual aspects of the martial arts. One and one-half class hours. Prerequisite: PED 132. Lecture: 1.5 hrs. Student Performance Outcomes: Based upon course examinations, class discussions, presentations, activities, and written assignments, students will be able to: 1. Identify a minimum of 3 philosophical and 3 spiritual aspects of karate training. 2. Demonstrate knowledge through class discussion of at least six elements of a system of life-long exercise and physical fitness that can be achieved through the martial arts. 3. Demonstrate and lead 15 upper body and 10 lower body techniques. 5. Demonstrate a minimum of 10 advanced self-defense techniques with 80% proficiency. 6. Perform all of the seisan kata. 7. Spar with a fellow student for 4 three minute rounds. 8.*Demonstrate teaching beginning students basic aspects of karate under the supervision of the Sensei, with 80% proficiency. *This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects. Content Outline: I. History and development of the martial arts continued II. Complex punching, blocking, kicking and movement III. Second half of the advanced form training IV. Sparring target work continued V. Free-sparring VI. Self-defense VII. Complete requirements for a first rank belt (belt examination optional) VIII. Analysis of self-defense situations from newspaper articles/how to avoid the problem IX. Mid-term and Final Examinations - written and physical Grading: Grades will be based on successful completion of several quizzes, and several written reports. A substantial portion of the grade will be based on an adequate demonstration of the techniques and forms practiced in class via a rank (or belt) examination. Effective Term: Fall 2008 |
