HUS113 - Alcohol/Drug Use and Abuse
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Examines the symptoms, physical, pharmacological, psychological, and social effects of addiction as a disease and the impact on society. Covers treatment programs and options. [Note: The New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services has reviewed this course and finds that it is consistent with established standards for alcoholism counselor education and training toward the CASAC credential.]

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Student Performance Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify in class discussion five factors affecting the set and setting of a chemical experience to include environment, peer involvement, coping mechanisms, media (marketing), etc.

2. Understand the relationship between over-the-counter, prescription, and herbal medications to drugs of abuse/addiction by identifying minimally one common property in various testing techniques.

3. Discuss the Disease Model of Addiction to include tolerance, reverse tolerance, synergism, defense mechanisms, etc. and the role of the American Medical Association in writing and or class discussion.

4. In writing, differentiate between chemical use, misuse, abuse, and addiction according to the criteria set forth by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and the diagnostic criteria form the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV-TR.

5. Identify and explain, in writing, a minimum of five routes of administration for drug entry into the body and give an example of a drug for each route.*

6. Explain, in writing, the role of alcohol/drugs and its impact on one of the following systems: criminal justice system, educational, health care, traffic safety, and manufacturing.

7. Explain, in writing, and/or verbally five theories of the etiology of alcohol/chemical abuse/addiction.


8. Understand the impact of alcohol/chemical use/abuse/addiction on the brain and identify the role of neurotransmitters play in use/abuse/addiction and relapse through various testing techniques. *

9. Explain the historical development of alcohol/drug use on an international and national level to include minimally 4 of the 7 significant laws in writing.

10. Identify and discuss at least three characteristics of alcohol, the drug, and related behaviors and/or illnesses through various testing techniques.

11. List and clarify five specific symptoms related to the addiction of alcohol/sedative-hypnotics and be able to differentiate between intoxication, overdose, and withdrawal symptoms.

12. Discuss the health issues associated with cocaine use as well as explain additional health-related hazards associated with other types of cocaine products, i.e., crack through various testing techniques.

13. Identify, in writing, five health related issues associated with amphetamine, non-amphetamine, caffeine, and nicotine use/abuse/addiction.

14. Summarize the effects of marijuana use/abuse/addiction on the human body as well as cite, in writing, three specific consequences associated with marijuana use/abuse/addiction.

15. Define Amotivational Syndrome as it pertains to marijuana use as well as explain the impact of use on memory, learning and motivation during adolescence through various testing techniques and/or class discussion.

16. Identify, minimally, 2 key properties of opium/opiates, as a pain reliever, that results in individual abuse/addiction in writing.

17. Explain the dynamics of set and settings as they pertain to the hallucinogens and psychedelics (LSD, PCP, mushrooms, peyote, etc.) in class discussion.

18. Compare the difference between a healthy family and an alcohol/substance abusing/addictive family, identifying roles within the family system, and how these roles interact and influence each other in writing and/or class discussion.

19. Identify mandated child abuse reporting basic requirements through class discussion.

20. Identify, through class discussion and in writing, three types of self-help groups and other forms of support groups as a means of helping addicted individuals.

21. List, in writing, physical and psychological effects of alcohol/substance use/abuse/addiction on pregnancy and understand its impact on health care and society.

*This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Plan.
