3 Catalog Description: Presents competencies required in the CDA (Child Development Associate) credential. Examines aspects of and methods for supporting children's intellectual, social and emotional growth and development. Lecture: 3 hrs. Student Performance Outcomes: The student will demonstrate in writing: 1. List five goals teachers and parents have for children's social and emotional development. 2. Give three actions a teacher can take to prevent behavioral problems in the following areas: a.Toys and materials b.Group time 3. Describe five different ways a teacher can act positively with children that can help prevent problems and help a child control their own behavior. State one specific application to infants, toddlers, and older preschoolers. 4. State four important guidelines for teachers in teaching children from different cultures. 5. Give five ways a teacher can respond effectively to incidents of prejudice in the classroom between children. 6. List four ways a teacher can foster children's friendships and cooperation. *7. In a table format, describe eight various behavioral or stressful situations a child may experience. For each give a positive approach or support strategy a teacher could use and describe why this approach could work. Also state one response a teacher would want to avoid for each situation and give one reason why for each. 8. What are five indicators of possible child abuse? Discuss two activities a teacher should take when suspecting child abuse. * This course objective has been identified as a student-learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects. Strategies for helping children deal with stress 6. Child Abuse Grading: A student's final grade is determined on the basis of successful completion of all written assignments, class participation, group projects, quizzes and a minimum of two exams.
