HED209 - Health Sciences Related to Coaching
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Introduces a series of interactive exercises and activities designed to study Health Sciences as they apply to coaching interscholastic sports in New York State. Presents the definitions of selected principles of biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology related to coaching, risk minimization, mixed competition, legal implications for coaches, and the NYSED Selection Classification program. Specific information will be given regarding current health issues facing athletes (i.e. Concussion/head trauma, the Female Athlete Triad, drug use and abuse, etc). Three class hours.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Student Performance Outcomes:
Based upon course examinations, class discussions, presentations, activities, and written assignments, students will:
1.Demonstrate knowledge of the NASPE Coaching Standards and the NFHS Code of Conduct.
2.Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of Risk Management and the legal implications with respect to supervision and negligence.
3.Write an essay on a chosen topic from psychology of coaching discussions describing the effects this topic can have on student-athletes, coaches, and the program as a whole.
4.Choose one major body system and design a presentation describing the importance of this system to athletes and athletic performance.
5.*Design a fitness and conditioning program for athletes for off season training in a sport of choice.
6.Research, find, and modify (or develop) a nutritional evaluation to use with athletes.
7.Discuss the major trend toward substance abuse in school-aged athletes.
8.Prepare a presentation on one particular abused substance; discussing the effect(s) it has on athletic performance and overall wellness.
9.Document in depth knowledge of the current information regarding head trauma and the issues connected with this injury.
10.Demonstrate knowledge of the current health issues school aged athletes face.
11.Identify athletic eligibility standards, district policies and guidelines, and the coaching code of ethics as per the New York State public high school athletic ruling organizations.

*This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
