3 Catalog Description: Presents techniques that help students cope successfully with the demands of the first year in college. Enlarges the student's awareness of self with respect to academic and personal goals, and assists each person to gain the necessary skills to succeed in college. Counts as general elective credit only. Not open to students who have successfully completed CES101, CEP101 or CEP102. Lecture: 3 hrs. Student Performance Outcomes: 1.Identify through class activities, extended writing or exam questions at least 4 of the major factors that influence success in higher education. 2.Apply through class activities, extended writing, or exam questions at least 2 strategies that develop active learning, critical, and creative thinking. 3.Attend or use at least 2 college services/presentations and complete a 1-2 page written assignment on the benefits obtained through the resource/presentation. 4.Submit in writing a personal time and task management plan illustrating the use of time for homework/study, classes, recreation, and other lifestyle activities. 5.Produce an application portfolio that demonstrates the use of effective academic skills including note-taking, active listening, learning strategies, test preparation, and test taking skills. 6.Identify and explain through class activities, extended writing or exam questions the 4 major types of learning styles and the relationship between his/her own learning style and at least 2 appropriate learning strategies.* 7.Identify through extended writing or through exam questions the 14 major steps involved in writing research papers. 8.Complete at least one career assessment inventory. Based on that inventory, identify in writing at least two of his/her major career interest areas and complete 2 written career reports covering the nature of the work performed, the employment outlook, education and training required, entry level positions, advantages and disadvantages of the career, and desired personality traits. 9.Identify through extended writing or through exam questions at least 5 basic components of a health and wellness system and submit a journal, letter, or other type of written self assessment that illustrates the use of at least 3 specific strategies in his/her life. 10.Demonstrate in extended writing or exam questions an understanding of the nature of diversity and be able to identify at least 4 specific categories. *This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
