BUS101 - Principles of Business
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Examines the scope of business as it relates to the global economic system. Topics include types of business ownership, management principles, the internal organization, human resource management, marketing, finance and risk management. Students should take this course during their first semester as a foundation for other business courses.

Lecture: 3 hrs.

Student Performance Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, as documented by class discussions, exams, papers, and presentations, the student will be able to:

1.Demonstrate the ability to apply the following business vocabulary, topics, and concepts:
a.Today's Business Environment:
(US Business Environment, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship and Ownership, Global Business)
b.Business of Managing:
(The Business Enterprise and Organization, Operations, Quality)
c.People Impact an Organization:
(Human Resources, Labor Relations, Motivation and Leading)
d.Importance of Marketing in Business:
(Marketing Processes and Consumer Behavior)
e.Business Finance:
(Money, Banking, Securities, Investments and Risk Management)

2.Demonstrate knowledge of business security and investment analysis utilizing the stock market as documented by completion of a project that requires collection, organization, calculation and analysis of data.*

3.Demonstrate business concept comparisons by summarizing current business articles relating to a minimum of five course topics, including comparison of the article information read with related course textbook information, documenting information similarities and differences.

4.Demonstrate effective business presentation skills in written and/or oral form at two opportunities during the course using compare/contrast information from business articles and the text for two of the topics per outcome #3 above.

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.
