4 Catalog Description: A continuation of BIO105 with a focus on the normal structure, function, and metabolic pathways of the following systems: endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, urinary, digestive and reproductive. Acid/base balance, body fluids and electrolytes are also considered. Laboratory work includes histological observations using microscopes, CD's and websites, anatomy studies using models and dissections, and physiological exercises. Three class hours and three lab hours. Prerequisite: BIO105. Lecture: 3 hrs. Lab: 3 hrs. Student Performance Outcomes: Students will be able to demonstrate each of the following skills on objective questions, written explanations, and/or practical exams without referring to notes, textbooks, or other resources. For each of the following systems: Cardiovascular Lymphatic/Immune Digestive Respiratory Urinary Endocrine Reproductive The student will: 1.Name and identify on models and/or diagrams all organs in each system. 2.Describe the functions of individual organs in each system. 3.Describe the functions of each system, especially in relation to feedback or other mechanisms that allow each system to maintain homeostasis. 4.Explain how each system interacts with the other body systems. 5.Identify and/or describe selected pathologies for each system. 6.Identify the histology of tissues and organs within each system. 7.Correlate tissue and organ histology to tissue, organ and system functions. 8.Explain basic principles of acid/base, fluid, and electrolyte homeostasis. 9.A comprehensive department-wide final will be administered.* *These course objectives have been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) and submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects. Content Outline: I. Endocrine System II. Blood III. The Heart IV. Cardiovascular System V. Lymphatic System VI. Immune System VII. Respiratory System VIII. Digestive System IX. Metabolism X. Acid-base, Electrolyte, Fluid Balance XI. Urinary System XII. Reproductive System Grading: Written and practical exams should make up the largest component of the grade (75% or more of the total grade). Quizzes, homework's, and laboratory assignments should be 25% or less. A comprehensive department-wide final is used in addition to unit tests. Effective Term: Spring 2006 |
