BIO102 - Human Biology
Credits: 3 Catalog Description: Surveys basic concepts of human anatomy and physiology, including the structure of cells, tissues, and organs and their normal physiological interactions. Laboratory experiences reinforce important concepts. Two class hours and two lab hours. Not open to students with credit in BIO105 or BIO152, BIO112, BIO113, BIO115, BIO116. Lecture: 2 hrs. Lab: 2 hrs. Student Performance Outcomes: On tests, laboratory reports and/or orally, students will demonstrate the ability to: *1. Students will identify the methods scientists use to explore natural phenomena, including observation, hypothesis development, measurement and data collection, experimentation, and the evaluation of data as documented by performance on a unit test. 2. Name and describe the organs of a minimum of five body systems along with their functions, correlating the body structures with their appropriate function. 3. Label the larger anatomical features of body systems identified in number 2 using diagrams and/or laboratory models. 4. Define homeostasis and be able to cite an example or mechanism of how it is maintained in each of the systems covered. 5. Define homeostatic imbalance as illustrated by using the minimum of one disorder per system discussed in class. Students should be able to describe in writing the factors and/or actions that can lead to the disorder, how the body may be impacted by the disorder, and preventative measure of the disorder. 6. When given a set of clinical values and anecdotal information, from one of the systems covered in class, students will be able to predict possible diseases and/or consequences to the health of the individual in question. This will be documented by performance on a unit test. 7.Describe in writing and/or orally at least one basic physiological process for each system covered in class. 8.Present in writing or orally a summary of two articles from the current literature on the topic of human biology. **These are the items that was chosen to be assessed as part of the Genesee Community College assessment plan. Students will demonstrate at least seven of the following skills in the laboratory: 9. Display appropriate safety practices in the laboratory while using chemicals, sharps, and biological specimens. 10. Estimate and measure volume, length, and mass using metric values. 11. Measure the pH of solutions using pH indicator paper. 12. Determine the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats using appropriate chemical tests. 13. Measure blood pressure, heart rate, and lung capacity. 14. Do blood typing using simulated blood. 15. Do urinalysis using synthetic urine. 16. Demonstrate kidney dialysis using dialysis tubing and salt/starch/sugar solutions. 17. Culture bacteria from body samples and/or environment samples. 18.
