ART123 - Ceramics 1

Catalog Description: Utilizes various methods of hand building in clay and focuses on vessel traditions and ceramic sculpture. Teaches students the mastery of clay materials. Encourages creativity, craftsmanship and development of personal ideas through a variety of problem solving assignments. Reading material, demonstrations, critiques and lectures with an overview of historical ceramics suppplement studio work. Lecture: 2 hours Studio: 2 hours

Lecture: 2 hrs.
Lab: 2 hrs.

Student Performance Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, based upon class demonstrations, discussion, presentations and written explanations, the student will be able to:

1. Design and construct clay objects that involve the following hand building techniques: Pinch, Coil and Slab
2. Distinguish differences between three different clay bodies by explaining the relationship of geology to the origin and characteristics of clay
3. Explain [orally and/or in writing] the physical and chemical changes that transform clay and glaze at each stage of the forming, drying and firing process
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate stage at which to construct, manipulate and decorate their ceramic objects as documented by a finished artifact that incorporates these skills and abilities as graded by a rubric
5. Demonstrate knowledge of historic and contemporary ceramics as documented by a minimum two-page paper tracing the development of ceramics as an art form*
6. Design and create a minimum of six projects which demonstrate the ability to effectively utilize clay. *
7. Critique own work as well as the work of others using a listing of standard elements
8. Describe the concepts and intent of a completed piece through an independent project culminating in an oral presentation, documented by a grading checklist/rubric

Introduction to clay
Hand building techniques:
a. Pinch
b. Coil
c. Slab
d. Extrusion
e. Molds

2. Use of slip, underglaze, terra sigillata and burnishing, glaze

3. Ongoing ceramic history presentations

4. Plaster:
a. Textural molds
b. 2 piece molds

5. Firing techniques:
a. Electric kiln
b. Pit fire
c. Possible alternative firings at other locations

6. Additional methods may include use of:
a. Paper Clay
b. Egyptian Paste
c. Low, mid and high temperature firings

7. Visiting artists and field trips may be part of curriculum


Grading:
Attendance, participation, and satisfactory completion of projects, examinations and assignments
