ART114 - Painting 1
Credits: 3

Catalog Description: Emphasizes the handling of media for aesthetic and technical considerations, space relations, color, line, tone, shape, and texture. Students must provide their own supplies. Two class hours, two studio hours. Prerequisite: ART 110

Lecture: 2 hrs.
Lab: 2 hrs.

Student Performance Outcomes:
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Create two project-based paintings based upon concepts of aesthetics and design. Projects must focus on creating a full value scale in color, and clean, presentable craftsmanship.

2. Create one visual image following a specific principle of design (introduced as a project).

3. Create at least two visual images following the specific steps for conceptual and design development through preliminary sketches with a focus on composition, concept development, and material planning (technique).

4. Create at least one visual image following the specific steps to craftsmanship and presentation.

5. Write a 500-word-minimum paper demonstrating knowledge of at least one contemporary painter.

6. Participate in at least one oral discussion of a semester project, demonstrating the application of course material to a particular painting/image.

7. Demonstrate the development of technique and skills as documented in the critique of their artwork and peer artwork.

*8. Complete a semester portfolio that contains the in-class assignments and all class projects.

* This course objective has been identified as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) And submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Office of Assessment and Special Projects.

Grading:
Grades will be determined based on performance on projects and portfolio completion. Attendance and participation may be a consideration in assigning grades.
