Remote access for users outside of the GCC network
What: This page explains
how you can access and use certain library databases from computers which
are outside of the GCC network, like your home or office computer. If you
are using a computer which is within the GCC network (any computer at the
Batavia campus, or the Albion, Medina, Arcade, Lakeville, Warsaw, or Dansville
Campus Centers) you do not need these instructions.
Why:
Some of the library's online databases are restricted to use by GCC students, faculty and
staff only. This is due to licensing agreements with database vendors. In order to use
these databases from home, you must "prove" to the database that you are an
authorized GCC user.
4. Enter your GCC network username and password,
click on
You may get a boxed Security Alert that asks "Do
you want to continue?" Click Yes.
You will now be connected to the database.
You can also choose to use other databases. Your privileges
to use databases will last until you end your internet session. Each
time you make a new connection to the internet, you will need to repeat
this process. Note: If you have problems connecting to other databases
or seem to lose your privileges, just close out and make a new connection
to the internet.
Network Username Note: All
registered GCC students, faculty and staff have a GCC network
account (a username and password.) This username and password
is used to log in to computers on campus and for your GCC email. This
is different than your GenESIS and WebCT account. See
complete
info about usernames and passwords. If you have questions about your account,
or receive an error message about your password,
contact the GCC HelpDesk for assistance. You
may call (585)343-0055 Ext. 6227, or, see the HelpDesk web
page for off-hours help and email options.
Internet
Browser Issues:
If you use Road Runner High Speed service you may have problems
using Internet Explorer with some of our databases. Download the
Mozilla
Firefox browser and use this instead.
Some internet service providers (ISPs), such as AOL and Compuserve,
use their own branded browsers, and these can cause problems for
GCC's remote access software. As a workaround, connect to the
provider, minimize the session, then use Internet Explorer or
Mozilla Firefox as your browser.
If you are using the NetZero HiSpeed service, an icon usually appeares
in the system tray in the lower-right corner of the screen that has
an option to disable HiSpeed. Disabling the HiSpeed allows access to
the databases in most cases.
